After working for brands like American Apparel & Quiksilver, brothers Nick & Jamie (aka Mr.Moon & Nature323) established 'Pistache' in London, 2003. Since then, Pistache has been on a mission to produce the best quality screen printed t-shirts available, with minimum impact on the environment & maximum impact when you wear them. Pistache screen prints everything by hand with eco-friendly inks. This gives every t-shirt a unique quality that can't be mass produced by machines. This was the first year that Slalom Skateboard Racing had been showcased at The NASS Festival. After a few initial teething problems - the main one being the relocation of the slalom course from the one that the UKSSA (www.ukslalomskateboarding) went to check out - twice - prior to the event. As it turned out we were relocated closer to the main hub of the event and adjacent to a very nice beer tent!

All competitors where issued with a wristband that gave access to the competitor campsite, complete with toilet and shower block. The wrist bands also gave us entry to the Relentless athlete lounge were you could escape the mayhem of the festival and relax with the freebies on offer, play xbox360, poker, pool, cans of Relentless, fruit, free beer (all of which was consumed on Friday night!) and Nandos chicken (if you were lucky enough to be there before the BMXr's and street skaters when it was being served up)

Saturday saw some 24 skaters take part in the hybrid slalom. The course was set by Clingfilm and challenged most skaters with some wide offsets. Simon, the latest addition to our number, was given the unenviable task of being "Mr PA" and race commentator, a task he carried out exceptionally well - talk about on the job training!! Pistache Clothing rider Louis was blazing nearly as much as the sun and showed that all that practice really does pay dividends, although he was just nudged out of the top four by an on form Sam Gordon. The finals saw some very close racing with Paul and Michael battling for the top spot while Chris Linford and Sam slugged it out for 3rd and 4th.

Mick Reiss ably assisted by Bish set a good tight course for Sundays racing and this again produced some very fast racing and exciting close finishes for the spectators. A short rain interlude meant we had to stop racing for half an hour or so but the sun soon broke through again allowing the finals to go ahead. The 1st place showdown was a repeat of the previous days final with Paul again just gaining the upper hand over Michael while the 3rd and 4th spot was contested between Sam (Pavel rider) and Louis (Gecko/Pistache rider). This time youth triumphed over experience and Sam had to make do with 4th.

I would like to thank everyone who took part and helped the UKSSA get a "foot in the door" at this event. Special thanks go out to our sponsors, Pistache Clothing, Octane Sports, and Glastonbury Ales.
Pistache Clothing provided some fantastic tshirts as prizes for the racers, and TONS of stickers that were quickly snapped up by eager skaters and bmxr's.
Octane Sports provided wheels as prizes, and also provided the ramps and timing equipment.
Glastonbury Ales provided essential nourishment throughout the weekend, day and night, and a couple of mini kegs of their finest brew as prizes.

This was the UKSSA's first race at NASS, billed as an exhibition/test race, and it was a great success which could not have happened without the hard work of many at the UKSSA and all our sponsors. The sponsor support will help us to secure next years racing at NASS and make it an even bigger event with international competitors, so a huge thank you to Pistache, Octane, and Glasto Ales!!!

Finsbury Park Open:

This grassroots type race was all brought together by racers Pat Holden and Rich Norbury, with backing from the council and the park. Everything had been planned perfectly, with all authorities very keen to have us racing, but the one thing that they couldn't control was the weather. It rained, and rained some more, but eventually several hours after we were meant to start the rain eased off and we found enough dry(ish) tarmac to run the race! Unfortunately by this time a few of the racers had to leave, but things went on without them.
We kicked things off with a Dual lane Tight Slalom on a shallow slope. Racing was fast with close times!

The top four were:
1. Paul Price (Pavel/Vans/Carhartt) - 13.63 seconds
2. Louis Selby (Pistache/Geckodecks) - 13.74 seconds
3. Michael Stride (Octane Sports) - 14.26 seconds
4. Chris Linford (London Pride) - 14.82 seconds

Later we moved things up the hill and held a fast single lane Hybrid style race. This event was a jam format, meaning no scheduled racing with all racers getting as many recorded times as they could in the time we had with the best times deciding the rank.

Top four were:
1 Michael Stride (Octane Sports) - 16.05 seconds
2 Louis Selby (Pistache/Geckodecks) - 16.15 seconds
3 Sam Gordon (Pavel Skateboards) - 16.70 seconds
4 Chris Charalambous - 17.09 seconds

Here's Louis' Writeup from the 'Pavel / Gang Of Germany outlaw slalom race, Düsseldorf & Cologne 2008 (in association with Carhartt, Concrete Wave, and Rockstar drinks)'

"The weekend started off with the English contingent setting off on Friday night to Germany, in Top Gear style. Sam Gordon, Rob Ashby, and I got the late flight with a cheapo airline while Paul Price raced down the motorways and autobahns in his 350z. The three of us got to stanstead, went through security, and in true British style gravitated towards the pub before boarding the plane. A few pints and a 50minute flight later we had landed at Düsseldorf Weeze, an airport still under construction in the middle of bloody nowhere. We got our rental car, met some random Venezuelan skateboarder who hitched a ride with us, and spent about half an hour trying to figure out how to start the modern German motor with keyless ignition. We bombed down the autobahn and arrived at our hotel in über-trendy Oberkassel around 1am. Naturally Jeremy Clarkson had beaten us to the hotel by a long shot, so we retreated to the bar to drown our sorrows and to prepare for racing on Saturday morning.

Saturday, and it was straight down to a hill along side the Rhine for the race and to meet the other Brits, Ella Roggero and Mick Reiss.
Most of the morning was spent training for the Amateurs Straight slalom, a course of cones spaced about 6feet apart in a straight line, and the Amateurs Special slalom, where the challenge is to be able to make it though an irregularly spaced course with a couple of surprise offset cones thrown in all while maintaining speed and control, much like ski slalom.
The racing got underway and 40 ams from all over Europe went head to head in dual Special slalom races. After qualifications, it went to a round of 16 in which I got knocked out due to coming off my board in both my runs (which I put down to having my board wrongly setup! Always blame the equipment), but Sam Gordon went on to take 6th place (to give an idea of how close the times were, 3rd place was only 0.114s faster than Sam's 13.277s run!). Mick Reiss placed 12th, I placed 16th, and Ella Roggero 31st (again, very close, the difference between 16th and 31'st place was barely 1 second).

Later in the day, and better luck for me! We had the Am's Straight Slalom, another head to head racing format, with me finishing in 8th place, Mick 11th, Sam 13th, and Ella 21st. More close times, with the difference between 1st and 10th being under a second. Sam lost to Pelle Gustavson of Sweden in their head to head race, and so received "The Finger" at its debut race. It's basically a big plastic middle finger which you receive when you've lost a race, with the idea being that you want to offload it onto some other unlucky soul at your next competition. So thanks to Pelle the British amateurs at least came home with one 'prize' among them.
The Pro's were the last to race, and our biggest success of the day was with UK Pro Paul Price placing 3rd in both Straight and Special Slalom.

Saturday evening was a Pool Party with Barbecue! The wooden and skateable kind of pool no less, situated in the Pavel Skateboards factory where Donald Campbell produces his fantastic products. Most of the skaters just chilled out, smoked, drank, and ate wurst.

Sunday was meant to be a Giant Slalom race, but this was rained off. Although this was a bit unfortunate, I think among a large portion of the racers there was a secret sense of relief, as we were spared horror of a 10ft launch ramp (which is pretty much the biggest ramp seen in recent years). Instead the racing was moved indoors to a warehouse, where we were faced with banging house music and monged faces at an illegal rave. Once they'd cleared off we had a very quick, informal fun race with Sam Gordon coming 8th (being beaten by Pelle again in 7th, reinforcing Sam's ownership of The Finger), Mick Reiss in 9th, Me in 15th, and Ella Roggero in 26th. In my head to head against Mick Reiss i was beaten by 0.002s! DAMN!

Overall it was a great competition, great people, great location and great skating. Brilliant start to the season!

The final standings saw Frank Beste take 1st in the Amateur Special Slalom, Antonio Saluena 1st in Amateur Straight Slalom, Michel Dupont 1st in Amateur Indoor Slalom, and somewhat predictably the ladies' man Dominik Kowalski took 1st in all three Pro races." by Louis Selby

The Gracie Jiu Jitsu Competition was impressive, even the white belts came to compete! The amateur MMA was also interesting, with the girls showing how it's done! Look out for new mma magazine 'MMA UNLIMITED MAGAZINE' which is edited by a close friend of the Pistache Tribe..... Look out for more martial arts prints from Pistache....

BRUCE LEE ON THE ART OF KUNG FU

"Gung fu is a special kind of skill, a fine art rather than just a physical exercise. It is a subtle art of matching the essence of the mind to that of the techniques in which it has to work. The principle of gung fu is not a thing that can be learned, like a science, by fact-finding and instruction in facts. It has to grow spontaneously, like a flower, in a mind free from emotions and desires. The core of this principle of gung fu is Tao - the spontaneity of the universe. After four years of hard training in the art of gung fu, I began to understand and felt the principle of gentleness - the art of neutralising the effect of the opponent's effort and minimising the expenditure of one's energy. All these must be done in calmness and without striving. It sounded simple, but in actual application it was difficult. The moment I engaged in combat with an opponent, my mind was completely perturbed and unstable. And after a series of exchanging blows and kicks, my theory of gentleness was gone. My only thought at this point was "Somehow or other I must beat him and win!"

My instructor at the time, Professor Yip Man, head of the wing chun school of gung fu, would come up to me and say "Leung (Lee's Chinese nickname was Lee Siu Leung), relax and calm your mind. Forget about yourself and follow the opponent's movement. Let your mind, the basic reality, do the counter-movement without any interfering deliberation. Above all, learn the art of detachment."

"That was it!" I thought. "I must relax!" However, right then I had just done something that contradicted against my will. That occurred at the precise moment I said, "I must relax." The demand for effort in must was already inconsistent with the effortlessness in relax. When my acute self-consciousness grew to what the psychologists refer to as the "double-blind" type, my instructor would again approach me and say, "Leung, preserve yourself by following the natural bends of things and don't interfere. Remember never to assert yourself against nature; never be in frontal opposition to any problems, but control it by swinging with it. Don't practice this week. Go home and think about it."

The following week I stayed home. After spending many hours meditating and practicing, I gave up and went sailing alone in a junk. On the sea I thought of all my past training and got mad at myself and punched the water! Right then, at that moment, a thought suddenly struck me; was not this water the very essence of gung fu? I struck it but it did not suffer hurt. Again I struck it with all of my might, yet it was not wounded! I then tried to grasp a handful of it but this proved impossible. This was water, the softest substance in the world, which could be contained in the smallest jar, only seemed weak. In reality, it could penetrate the hardest substance in the world. That was it! I wanted to be like the nature of water.

Suddenly a bird flew by and cast its reflection on the water. Right then as I was absorbing myself with the lesson of the water, another mystic sense of hidden meaning revealed itself to me; should not the thoughts and emotions I had when in the front of an opponent pass like the reflection of the bird flying over the water? This was exactly what Professor Yip meant by being detached - not being without emotion or feeling, but being one in whom feeling was not sticky or blocked. Therefore in order to control myself I must first accept myself by going with and not against my nature. I lay on the boat and felt that I had united with Tao; I had become one with nature. I just lay there and let the boat drift freely according to its own will. For at that moment I had achieved a state of inner feeling in which opposition had become mutually cooperative instead of mutually exclusive, in which there was no longer any conflict in mind.
